(July 24/17) “A Spontaneous Explanation/Thank You” :)

Hello, Amazers,

I just read a really flattering comment from someone whose artistry and heart I admire so much…and it inspired me to share this with you.

I’m guessing many of you have heard the expression/philosophy that advises that we need to help ourselves before we help others…

A literal and metaphorical example is the airplane emergency…

The instruction given is that–in event of emergency–you’re to give yourself oxygen first; for, it’s shortsighted to see to another’s needs at the expense of your own.

Put simply….the best way to help is to make sure you’re alive” to do so.

I say this to share that my complex,

abstract,

pun-riddled,

deeply-layered writings

are my “oxygen”…

the air that “fills my lungs” so that I can take the deep breaths that relax me…that recharge me…that feed my faith in hope…

that shines a light on the many blessings I’d be blind to otherwise.

In my determination to grow in a direction that uplifts me and focuses on my ever-unfolding best self, I need to use my, renewable, emotional energies in service of the really hard work that growing/thinking/processing can be…

But, growing requires an open mind–and renewal requires an influx of soul fuel.

Having an open mind means one must have a filter/boundaries…or else, any and everything falls in…

and, as we all know, there is much that isn’t good for our psyches–our mental health….much that is toxic and draining.

For example, not many of us would choose to watch the news for hours and hours on end–given the media’s “if it bleeds, it leads” focus (violence, oppression, genocides, abuse of power…on and on…and how fear-inspiring and demoralizing!).

Conversely, we in this blogging community share in order to contribute to the good…to uplift, entertain, impart wisdom, share sights and wonders and foods etc. that other’s might never see otherwise…

And, we share in the event that people can relate to our experiences…our commonalities…whether highs or lows.

So, since (other than during vacation) I can’t write/share more than I do (given time-consuming work responsibilities, relationships in my in-person-world…and, my relationship with myself), I dedicate my creativity to the writing style that gives me the biggest growth for my efforts.

It makes sense that it takes my dedicated supporters additional time and effort (and often, more than one reading) to get what I’m saying…

For, writing each post takes a lot more time than the hours I spend writing….

The word play that has people reading/re-reading–before lighting up with understanding and enjoyment–is much the same (life) process I go through.

Granted, the puns and wordplay come to me spontaneously–and, I easily/immediately get them–but, the foundation of my creatively-expressed points are hard-won/hard-understood life lessons.

It’s tempting to revert to pressuring/expecting myself to get it all right,

make it all better

RIGHT NOW!

But, there is no compassion in that…

I’ve learned there are no quick fixes…you need to learn to crawl before you walk, and walk before you can run…and run before you can fly..

But, trying to run from/out run life lessons is short-sighted…and results in taking longer to see that you’ve been going in the wrong direction…like moving through a fog.

So, I’ve said all of this to say that I am so grateful there are those who appreciate and benefit from my best efforts…

As are you, I’m driven to contribute to the good in a way that moves me closer and closer to my highest self…

And, I can’t over-state how blessed I am to have you support me as I navigate a myriad of vulnerabilities….and abject joys!

You are making a difference you can only imagine πŸ™‚

And, a special thank you to

God bless you and your loves, Wonderfuls.

Affectionately,

Truly

  1. I love your posts. They fill me up. When I need a lugh..when I need to groan…….cry, giggle, just think……….whatever. They are the first ones I read, each and every day.

    1. I’m absolutely blown away….just…blown away….I’m stunned….I had no idea….wow, nothing could touch my heart more…I am going to add an additional P.S thanking you (with a link to your blog)….by the by, you know the feeling is mutual…you are brilliant and caring and compassionate, and funny, and… πŸ™‚

  2. Super analogy and one that anyone struggling with MH or “over kindness” must remember. If one doesn’t look after ones own spirits then there will be hardship down the line. I think that’s where getting away from the toxic is probably the best move too. That drains and the more it drains the more it wants…must avoid anecdotes on that one! Looking back my toxic was more a leach. The more you do the more they want and if you stop doing they continue manipulating.

Time to come up for air, as it were.

Thank you for the affirmation that

    My needs
    Everybody else’s needs

Is the correct mental framework…pecking order if you so like. And one that validates the oxygen mask protocol. Lovely post Truly, but then…. They always are 😊

    1. I am so proud of you for reminding yourself that you are deserving of “oxygen”–and that you had the courage to face the truth about sources of toxicity…that can be sooooo painful when it’s someone you’d cared about. You are wonderfully-kind, and that’s needed in the world…thanks for spreading the goodness πŸ™‚

      1. I thought the simile was excellent Truly. Another good boost that doing the right thing by me is the correct one. Its no good going over the same old ground, to coin Pink Floyd!

      2. Yes, being true (and good) to ourselves is paramount–even when it feels counter-intuitive. A few days ago I forced myself to say–“no…sorry, I can’t without depriving myself”– to someone….I felt sooooo uncomfortable, but I stuck to my guns. I’m not sure it will ever become easy, but I’m thinking it won’t be as stressful as I practice πŸ™‚

      3. I think when you first start taking back control, it is hard. Especially if its ingrained and feeding that default mind. The challenge is to realise that and use “No” to be of benefit to you and not feel guilty. Its a very powerful word to people naturally engendered to be nice. You are not only fighting the discomfort, but also many years of a mind that has allowed you to avoid using the word. The journey, as you well know, needs us to take back control in order to be better in mind and spirit.

  3. This post is amazing and I completely love the analogy of oxygen. I know this may sound weird but I always read your blogs last. This is not because I dont like your blogs but rather because I would prefer to take my time to read your blog and then this way it is the last thing on my mind which allows me to wrap my head around the words. I always find I leave the best to last so that I can savour every moment to the best of my ability whether that be food or a t.v. show or a blog. Some people may not agree with this but this is me and this is how I work. Thank you for another amazing post.

    1. I’m not sure how I didn’t reply to your highly appreciated comment! I apologize! I can only imagine that I did respond but somehow messed up the “send”. Thank you for taking the time to share your process with me….your generosity of spirit has given me such a boost of confidence and appreciation. I am so grateful that someone as deep, sensitive, articulate, strong, and wise as you finds my offerings appealing. Thanks again πŸ™‚

    1. I’v left a response on your blog, so I won’t repeat myself…but, I can’t help but add that your generosity of spirit has me so caught off guard and so grateful…I’m going to have to write a post about the ripples of kindness that I am benefiting from…and, of course. you will be given your due (I know you didn’t do it for the glory, but it is my pleasure to shine a light on your goodness and grace). πŸ™‚

  4. I’ve just returned from a whirlwind visit (once again!) to Toronto and am sitting here all headachy and jet-lagged while inhaling your words like oxygen, I’m swimming blind in overwhelm right now due to over-kindness to others and realize I need to STOP now and take that breath…your posts always find their way to me at the right time…thank you again, Truly!

  5. I’m honest to say that sometimes I cannot understand all of your exquisite word plays. But no matter how busy I am, I always stop by because I feel like you are my friend. Supportive and lovely – that is you!
Happy to support you in every way because you ooze friendship from every pore!

  6. My dear, you are Truly a darling πŸ™‚ — and it comes across SO clearly in this care-filled and considerate post about taking *care* of your sweet self – especially in the format in which you blog.

Great reminder for all of us. The “cleaner” our own energy, the more likely it is to resonate with others – because who we are shines through.

  7. So glad to see the impact you’re having on so many lives. Living a life true to yourself is an important component in life that many are willing to sacrifice. It is not always easy sharing depths of personality in a random world or diversity, but you have bravely done so.

Your wit and play on words and expressions forces the reader’s mind to “work harder.” Those complaining about this effort certainly have the right to do so (although I would recommend instead they choose not reading rather than complaining.) For those rejuvenated by GROWTH through EFFORT, your writing adds great VALUE. When I see an email notification that “TrulyUnplugged” has posted another “work of art,” it ALWAYS brings a smile to my face.

Wishing you much joy and happiness in LIFE. πŸ™‚

    1. Thank you so much, Anna…you are just so generous and encouraging…I appreciate you very much. Having just finished my latest post, I will ‘visit’ you in the morning…my eyes are soooo tired and I have no idea where my (drug store) reading glasses are. All those hours spent doing notes at work, coupled with the hours of today’s writing has done me in. But, I’m thinking of you ❀
