(June 11/16) Glad-Less Night & The Dips…

Hi, y’owl.  Welcome to my British themed–pip-pip and cheeri-blows–Apathy & Pity Party. Planned last week, I couldn’t be bothered to host it–and, now, I’m just going through the motions…

And there you have it….having been warned of this relative-ly dismal gathering, here ends the  auntie-uplifting nod to all things English.  No euphemistic  chin up, or stiff upper lip, I’m afraid…time for some boring old domestic whining….

However, if it’s any consolation, a few musical guests are in attendance…

But don’t get too excited.  As is the case with the blues, all hues sound alike…so, The Contempt-tations will be singing an old school version of the same old song (they’re the  four in the 1960’s, spangly, tops)

Although, on the up side of the down side, I find it a strangely comforting tune when I’m verging on succumbing to a familiarity-breeds-contempt-mindset…

And, feel free to follow the bouncing ball when the cool cats get to the chorus…It goes a little something like this...

What I am is what I am

It’s like that, and that’s the way it is…

…yeh, it’s like that, and that’s the way it is

Anyway, let’s get this snarky party started…

I can ‘t remember where or when, but I saw footage of a young person who was so busy texting she walked right into a manhole…

Well, sometimes, I have the opposite issue…sometimes I feel like there’s too much to see (and d0)…and, not nearly enough time for it all…which is a (yellow traffic) signal that I’ve turned an unwelcome corner and need to be mindful to stay in the now…

But, sometimes, those cautions make me see red; and–frustrations mounting–urge me to shriek to a a halt.  For, trying to do a good deal of everything makes it tempting to make the most of doing nothing…

And, seen in the, ensuing, dwindling light, green takes on shades of, “Go”…as in, “Go fly a kite (self) while I’m busy feeling sorry for us.

Further truth is, sometimes, I feel like a sluggish turtle carrying the weight of the word on my back; and, as I traverse this literary path, sometimes I feel blogged-down

Sometimes, no matter how I look at it, all I see are potholes–dips in a questionable length of rocky road…and, here’s the drill

Lately, I’ve been boring myself…feeling left (and right) like a pinata that’s been wacked with a (‘wouldn’t touch me with a) ten foot pole…

And, it’s poked (I’m-not-so-hot) holes in my theory that awesomeness is a birthright….and, this has resulted in the writing slump that is bowing me to its pressure…

So, as chilly as this post may be,  when you live in the Arctic, you can always bank on occasional snowfalls, if you get my drift

Alright, that last line was just crazy talk….yes, I live in Canada…but, no, not in an igloo (that’s a Canadian inside joke). 🙂

Oh, give me a second, please….someone’s insistently banging at the door….

Hey, it’s an uninvited guest….an, in-your-Face(book), party crasher that I haven’t seen for a year….

Turns out that, sans beef , she says she has something to share that’s going to steer me back on course.

Wait a sec….it’s all coming back, now!  She’s right–and, I’m feeling better already…

If you follow the bouncing ball and say it with me, maybe it’ll make you smile as well…

The odds are against you, they said…beat the odds!”  But, I knew better—it was another one of their mainstsream lies.  The ‘odds’ are the game-changers—they are the dreamers and innovators…and, even if downtrodden for a time–ever the trail blazers–they’ll keep marching to their own beat…you may use their sticks against them, but you will never, ever, take their drums…

Until next time, my treasured Irreplaceables… 🙂

God Bless You…. 🙂

P.S. Gladys Knight and the Pips, The Temptations,  and The Four Tops were huge in the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s (and are still awesome!  🙂 )–the latter group sang “The Same Old Song”; back in the day of televised sing-alongs, viewers were urged to”follow the bouncing ball” as lyrics scrolled across the screen;  “What I Am (is what I am)” is an Edie Brickell and New Bohemians tune; “It’s Like That” is by Run DMC; and, after sketching out this–I’m sick of my own thoughts–post, I briefly logged on to Facebook, and was notified that I’d written/posted the odd message exactly one year ago….further proof that divine intervention is the best encouragement there is…oh, and for some weird reason, the last line was inspired by a promo clip for the movie, “Braveheart”.

      1. I can certainly appreciate what that feels like….and, at times like this, it sure is great when someone with an outside perspective lets you know that they can see what is clouded by self-doubt, or sadness, or some emotional burden etc…..you are a light, and your writing is so gorgeous…..as is your gift for connecting the reader to you….I hope you feel better soon 🙂

  1. Tomorrow was a misfortunate term as, while responding to your Facebook comment, I spotted the direction unto your blog and followed the trail…et voila….

Rover…bouncing balls….the village guarded by the circular entity bouncing over the landscape…

    “We want information, information, information
    Who are you?
The new number 2, who is number 1?
    You are number 6
I am not a number, I am a free man”

Two British themes there for theming continuity…three if you include me…. Rover you shall have to ponder, the lyrics might give the game away…who?? Iron Maiden…the track…go seek Rover as ’tis the same as the title of the bouncing ball program…spoilers…..

Canada too…excellent…you use the letter ‘u’ too and, no doubt ‘s’ instead of ‘z’… Long running debate betwixt my American friends and I…obviously English is English….although the banter is always a hoot and never meant as anything but, well, banter….which is funny more often than not as words gradually lose both letters entirely….point in question, gradally…yo find lotz of wordz changing…I digrezz….

Lovely post once more Truly and musically articulate…..very fashion-able…to coin the late David Bowie

Most enjoyable my mad friend 🙃

    1. I Googled and now have context for numbers and “I’m not a number, I am a free man” 🙂 I love riddles…and, your comments are always so entertaining and set my mind “on a course for adventure…” (that’s from the theme song of the Love Boat…and wouldn’t have occurred to me if not for you :). Thanks for you kind comment, and for reading…make sure you check out the comment I left on your latest post 🙂

      1. Very good…it’s a very old TV series…some get it just from Rover…although die hard rockers would hit it from Iron Maiden….I used this particular mix in my book too 😊
I have just replied my dear friend….and very kind of you to pour on accolades for a post I found difficult.
Ohh you like riddles…next time no google and we can play the word game to see if I can drop clues for you to complete the puzzle 😇

      2. I never would have figured out the answer without Google….I’v never heard of the series…but, now I am intrigued 🙂 You found the post difficult? That is intriguing inside info, for it read as smooth as silk 🙂

      3. Ah…ok, that would have proved more of a challenge indeed 😁 Yes, very difficult, subject matter and all that…also blending it with other writings where I’ve mused on things. Content that is….hadn’t even considered if it read smoothly or not….but thank you so much for saying it did to you 😊

  2. What a writing style. I have a laptop next to my desktop so I can google certain remarks to gain greater clarity and appreciation for your humor. Complicated, yes. Worth it, definitely, Look forward to it, everytime I see you in my email!

    1. Wow! Thank you so much!!! My friend, Gary, often makes references in his comments that require me to Google–to better understand his compliments….and, I, too, find it fun and worth it to do so. I also Googled Norm Crosby….thank you for taking precious time and energy to “get me”…you are so appreciated….also, it made me smile to think of you taking a multi-pronged approach to tackling my flights of fancy…I am very lucky. Thanks again 🙂

    1. Hi, there…I am not sure how to “meet you” and read your posts….can you give me a better idea of who you are? When I click on your WordPress address, it seems to be a generic blog that gives me information about setting up a blog…are you an individual….I think I’m missing something–I am technologcally-challenged, thus, clueless at this point 🙂

  3. Familiarity that breeds contempt is like an old friend that sends you on a fool’s run. Sounds like you should be singing”I’m in a funk.” Sometimes the best way is to make the most out of doing nothing by taking a day and doing nothing. What blows my mind is God saw fit to rest. If God saved a day to rest then what makes me think”I will survive” without it. Take a day. Play cribbage with your hubby, take a (baby) stroll down a (memory) lane. Maybe during that time you’ll find a ‘series of fortunate events’ full of fun twists(ed sister) adventures…. Sorry, even those word plays took me a while… Praying your day soon brightens a little more.

  4. I can never stop mentioning about your writing style yet again! 😀 It is so very unique and awe-inspiring! I agree with comments above on the Google part, as most of the references made were from an era, before I was born. 🙂 Yet, I love trying to find them and understand the pun, I feel that’s the best part!! Always enlightening to read your work Truly!! 🙂 🙂

Such a flattering and generous perspective…thank you sooooo much for letting me know that you enjoy discovering new things about older times…that is amazing to know and makes me really, really….really happy. I am so thrilled and grateful to know that my desire/ability to connect reaches across generations…wow…I am just so grateful right now…thank you so much!!!! 🙂

      1. I love discovering new things. It’s always a pleasure knowing about the older times. They are evergreen and classic, unlike the current, that come, make a buzz and then vanish in a jiffy! 😀 I’m so glad that my interest and pleasure in reading and exploring your offering, made you happy!! 🙂 🙂 Keep sharing such wonderful works! 🙂 🙂

  5. as perplexing as ever… but wonderfully amusing. I love the uniqueness of your words and I can’t wait to puzzle over them… you just don’t show up in my reader even though I follow you… (why is that… I must always remind myself to visit you and I am always pleased… )

I always have loved Edie’s voice and her songs… I remember being touched (hard lonely times) by one of her lyrics… back in the late 80s…

    And being alone is the
Is the best way to be
    When I’m by myself… etc… yada yada… (did I just ruin the song… )
    no one can say goodbye….

think that is it… anyway… glad to be a part of the circle of your friends…

    1. Oh, wow….I get it! The song is called “Circle”….I had to Google because I didn’t recognize the lyrics….but, as soon as I heard it, I was so delighted because I love that song! And, it would have been a great reference for my post 🙂 See? This is the joy of connection…the reciprocity that creates ripples of happiness… not only did your feedback make my day, but rediscovering this song is a gift that you’ve given me….and, best of all, the shoe is on the other foot….I didn’t catch the pun “circle of your friends” for a few seconds even after hearing the song….you got me good….how awesome…so this must be what it feels like when someone realizes that the message is also the wordplay….you are very good at this….you did it so smoothly that, absent italics, the pun part almost went over my head….I am really, really happy to know that I am a part of your circle of friends (this will be awkward if you were simply quoting a lyric/making a literary point 🙂 ) Thank you for your kindness.
      Your friend,
      Truly

      1. haha…the written word can be so easily misinterpreted….I knew that it was a lyric and a pun…I meant the awkward part would have been if you didn’t literally mean we were friends…but were just making a pun using the lyrics… 🙂

    2. P.S. I’ve always had an affinity for sad songs…and, Edie’s voice and look and songs are so appealing…I just loved her laid back, unvarnished style…it made her seem very genuine and real…I imagine she is still that way 🙂 Oh, and when I was first thinking of a song, I thought of including lyrics to “Everybody Hurts”, by REM, but I thought that might be going to far and would make people sad…

  6. “… sometimes, I feel like a sluggish turtle carrying the weight of the word on my back…”

Ah! the ol’ shell game, is it?? That remark deserves a re-tortoise, and here it is: Take heart! Slow and steady wins the race, as the honey said to the molasses… : )

You are, decidedly, the reigning pun-meister, dear Truly! Hang ye in there, and pour forth your effervescent prose with gusto! : )

    1. You are just such a ray of sunshine! Thank you for being such a source of joy, positivity and encouragement 🙂 Slow and steady wins the race indeed….and, yes, I will hang in…how could I not when I am urged to “pour forth (my) effervescent prose with gusto! Wow, such eloquence…how could I deny such a request. haha….You are awesome…I’m about to “visit” you to see what you are up to. Thank you for being so wonderful, my friend 🙂
